  • Battle of Centla and the taking-off of Potonchan:

The expedition of Cortes continued along the coast guided by the navigator Anton de Alaminos until reaching the March 14, 1519 the mouth of the Tabasco river, near the city of Potonchan. There was produced the crucial Battle of Centla. The Spaniards searched in the houses and found no more than corn and turkeys, and some things of cotton, and little trace of gold. No more than four hundred military men were defending the place. A lot of Indian blood was shed in taking that city. The wounded were many, captives were few; the dead were not counted. Cortés took up residence in a temple with all the Spaniards. They slept there that night, but Indians didn´t dare to do anything. That way Potonchan, which was the first city that Hernán Cortés won by force in what he discovered and conquered was taken.
